“Yipeng” is one of the most important festivals of the Lanna calendar, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th month in the northern calendar, which coincides with Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival. It is a time when people pay homage to sacred relics, worship the moon, and release krathong to let go of misfortunes while wishing for blessings to come.
Chiang Mai, as the cultural heart of Lanna, is renowned as the “City of Lights” during Yipeng. The city glows with thousands of traditional krathong, magnificent parades, and the lighting of “Phang Prathip” (clay lanterns) around the moat, reflecting the Buddhist faith and blessings for the land.
Yipeng Festival is not only a sacred tradition of faith but has also become a world-renowned celebration that visitors from across the globe look forward to—an enchanting experience of Lanna heritage, culture, lifestyle, and creative economy that flourishes throughout the city.
