Lanna Thai Costume
The ancient festival of the Lanna city in the northern region of Thailand is illuminated by the radiance of lanterns, lanterns placed around houses, and the vibrant colors of various plant species found in the forest entrances. Candlelight from lanterns and floating lanterns along the riverside, all of which are born from the faith and reverence of the people of Chiang Mai.
There are several legends regarding the origins of the Yi Peng tradition. For instance, the Yonok and Jam Thevi dynasties legends mention that the tradition of floating lanterns, or "Loi Krathong," is an ancient practice that has been passed down through generations.
During the Yi Peng festival, scriptures such as the Lanna "Bai Lan" scriptures are used for religious ceremonies in various temples across the region. These scriptures include "Bai Lan Anusornsombat," "Bai Lan Anusorn Phangprathit," and "Bai Lan Anusorn Yipeng."
This marked the beginning of the concepts of "Lanna Light Festival" and "Lanna, Worship, and Lights," which are reflected through the Yi Peng festival's beautiful light displays throughout Chiang Mai. The festival is celebrated in the traditional Lanna style, emphasizing creativity and reflecting the roots of the tradition, while honoring nature, ancestors, and the surrounding environment.
